Job Description of a Private Nurse

Private Nurses usually don’t work in healthcare institutes or hospitals. They attend patients at their home. They follow the instructions of the physicians while taking care of the patients. The services of a private nurse are usually required by patients recovering from disability or long illness.

The jobs of private nurses are contractual. They visit the patients’ home on a contract basis. Providing medical services is not enough for them. They also need to offer emotional support to the patients as well as the family members of the patients. Private Nurses should also educate the patients and their family about preventing measures and recovery measures to be adopted.

Duties of a Private Nurse

The primary duty of a private nurse is to evaluate the condition of the patient as well as to record the symptoms and report them to the doctor. The nurse needs to keep the patient under observation 24X7. She needs to note down vital signs. The reports they submit to the doctors, help the physicians to develop treatment plan. Developing the care plan is the nurse’s responsibility. She can consult the doctor if needed.

It is the duty of a private nurse to administer treatments and medications of a patient. She should check if cleaning wounds or changing dress is required. Maintaining medical equipments is also included within the job responsibilities of a nurse who practice privately.

Nurses also teach the patients about good health practices and proper diet. The nurse may plan a diet for the patient and make sure that the food is prepared properly so that the patient gets required nutrition.

Skills of a Private Nurse

The job of a private nurse is quite challenging. If you wish to get private nursing jobs possessing the following skills is necessary for you.

  • Patience
  • Eye for detail
  • Communication skill
  • Compassion

Other than these, you will also need to be physically and mentally fit. Providing emotional support will be one of your most important tasks. You should be alert enough to respond to some emergency situations.

Qualification of a Private Nurse

If you want to become a private nurse, holding a bachelor’s degree in nursing is a must for you. Once you earn your degree you will have to obtain a license. Advanced degree is not mandatory, but it can increase your chance of getting a job.
