Some Examples of Interesting Catering Jobs

When people think of working in the catering industry they tend to think of waiters and cooks. However, those who work in the industry will tell you that there are many different types of jobs available within the industry. A quick glance at the various jobs advertised on caterer uncovers dozens of interesting hospitality jobs that do not involve cooking or waiting on tables. Here are just a couple of examples.

Sommelier

Many people forget that the catering industry requires specialists in the same way every other industry does. This is especially the case at the top end of the industry. When it comes to wine there are plenty of specialist roles. Finding, sourcing and developing wine provides very interesting and well-paid work for hundreds in the industry.

Perhaps the most important of these roles is that of sommelier. A wine steward or sommelier has to know everything there is to know about wine. They need to know what each wine tastes like, how to keep the wine and which is the right wine for the course and food that is being eaten. Unsurprisingly an experienced sommelier can charge a lot of money for his or her services. Starting salaries are around £18,000 and rise to £60,000 and more for those with more experience.

Specialist Chefs

There are plenty of specialist chef roles in the catering industry. Some chefs specialise in cooking and preparing certain types of food. Good examples of this include pastry chefs, bakers and sushi chefs. There are also plenty of roles for chefs who specialise in a specific cuisine. Demand is high for those with experience of cooking Thai, Indian and Polish food. The more experienced and better qualified the chef is the more likely it is that they can find work in the top restaurants and begin to command a high salary.

If you already work in the catering industry and would like better job security or to be able to earn more, specialising is a good way forward. Take a look around the industry and choose a role or two that you would like and map out a career path that will take you there.
